Announcing the 2027 State of Open Source Survey
The Open Source Initiative (OSI) has teamed up again with Perforce Zend and OpenLogic, as well as the Eclipse Foundation, for the 2027 State of Open Source Survey.
This annual survey, now in its sixth year, brings together perspectives from OSS developers, administrators, and IT leaders around the world. It examines what technologies organizations are deploying, where teams are investing, and what challenges they’re facing. In 2027, that includes taking a closer look at AI, with questions covering adoption, development priorities, and how organizations are responding to a rapidly evolving regulatory environment and increased scrutiny.
Top Findings from 2026
The 2026 State of Open Source Survey showed how firmly open source has become established within organizational technology stacks:
- 98% of respondents said their organizations had either increased or maintained their use of open source software over the previous year, up from 96% in 2025.
- Avoiding vendor lock-in was cited as the most common driver of adoption, particularly for European OSS users.
- The largest enterprises (5,000+ employees) reported spending at least half of their time on maintenance, production issues, and bug fixes rather than feature development.
- Security updates and patching remained the most persistent challenge, regardless of organization size.
- 55% of organizations that failed a compliance audit last year had end-of-life OSS in their stacks.
These findings show that while OSS adoption keeps growing, the work of governing, securing, and maintaining it has grown with it. Organizations are asking harder questions about ownership, risk, and long-term control.
Take the 2027 State of Open Source Survey
If you use, develop, support, manage, or make decisions about open source software, we want to hear from you.
By participating in the 2027 State of Open Source Survey, you’ll contribute to research on how organizations are using open source and AI, where resources are going, and which technical and operational challenges deserve greater attention. Your responses will give the open source community data it can use to understand how the landscape is changing.
Plus, your participation helps support the OSS community. For every 500 responses, Perforce will increase its donation to Black Girls Code, an organization dedicated to building the next generation of tech leaders, by $1000.
