Current data governance frameworks for Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED) treat algorithmic fairness and human bias as separate audit challenges, missing the critical feedback loops between them. When students interact with AI systems, their cognitive biases can exploit training data biases, creating amplification cycles that traditional algorithmic auditing cannot detect or govern effectively. This creates a fundamental data governance challenge: How do we audit and govern AI systems when the bias emerges not just from algorithms or humans alone, but from their interaction patterns?
Educational AI tools can generate interaction data that reveals how human cognitive patterns intersect with algorithmic biases in ways current governance frameworks cannot address. This talk presents evidence-based governance frameworks derived from developing “DeBiasMe,” an AI literacy intervention that addresses human-AI bias interactions in educational contexts. Drawing from user research and stakeholder collaboration, I’ll demonstrate how institutions can implement transparent, auditable approaches to human-AI bias detection using open standards and multi-stakeholder governance models.
The presentation covers: (1) Open bias taxonomies for systematic AI audit processes, (2) Data provenance standards for bias detection systems, (3) Stakeholder engagement frameworks for transparent AI governance, and (4) Scalable approaches to bias visualization and institutional accountability. The presentation will include live demonstrations of bias detection and visualization systems, showing how institutions can implement transparent governance without compromising user privacy or learning effectiveness.

Overview
This presentation introduces “DeBiasMe,” an AI literacy intervention addressing human-AI bias interactions in education. The project represents a shift from reactive problem-solving to proactive design in educational AI governance.
The Current Challenge
Reactive Approach:
- Focuses on efficiency: “How can AI make education more efficient?”
- Measures productivity gains through automated writing and research
- Detects problems after they undermine learning
Future-Oriented Approach:
- Asks: How do we preserve critical thinking capabilities?
- How do we embed educational values in human-AI collaboration?
- How do we ensure democratic participation in designing these interactions?
The fundamental tension: How do we balance long-term collective values against short-term efficiency pressures?
Research Findings: The Efficiency Gap
A mixed-methods study with 11 university students revealed:
- 78% use AI to save time on assessments
- Only 23% can identify when AI reinforces their existing beliefs
This “efficiency gap” shows students optimize for task completion while metacognitive skills—the capacity to maintain meaningful control over thinking processes—erode systematically.
Three Critical Gaps
1. Lack of Bias Awareness
- Students don’t understand how their cognitive biases affect prompt formulation
- Develop automation bias: over-reliance on AI outputs without critical evaluation
2. Gaps in AI Understanding
- Students don’t comprehend AI limitations and capabilities
- Treat AI as a “black box” productivity tool
- Leads to cognitive sovereignty erosion
3. Diminished Critical Thinking
- Efficiency-focused use promotes cognitive offloading
- Creates dependency without skill development
- Amplifies confirmation bias
Current Framework Limitations
Existing AI literacy frameworks lack:
- Comprehensive bias interventions addressing human, AI statistical/computational, and systemic biases
- Metacognitive skills development
- Attention to attributional and affective dimensions (confidence, trust, perceived agency, anthropomorphism)
- Accessible tools for non-technical users
This widens the digital divide and deepens educational inequalities.
The DeBiasMe Solution
Two-Part Approach:
- Metacognitive Interventions: Creating safe spaces for bias exploration, recognition, and mitigation
- Bidirectional Design: Giving users agency at both input and output stages
Prototype Components:
- Prompt Refinement Tool (input stage intervention)
- Bias Visualization Map (output stage awareness)
Both tools make implicit human and AI biases explicit and actionable, helping students develop awareness of their thinking patterns.

- Protects individual privacy while enabling systemic accountability
- Aggregated data reveals systematic disparities requiring intervention
- Balances local autonomy with system-wide standards
- Implements right to privacy, education, and participation in public affairs
4. Stakeholder Engagement
- Recognizes students as primary stakeholders, not token voices
- Students actively participate in defining relevant biases
- Educators become implementation partners
- Builds digital citizenship skills

Tool Demonstration
The bias mapping activity works as follows:
- Establish Context: Users specify institution type, role, subject area, and AI tool usage
- Select Biases: Choose from three categories (human, AI statistical/computational, systemic) or add custom types
- Connect Biases: Link biases to show amplification patterns, with required annotations explaining interactions
- Set Confidence Levels: Assess certainty of observations
- Review Dashboard: See individual mapping and aggregated institutional patterns
- Inform Policy: Expert-reviewed data informs personal reflection and institutional policy
Note: The tool is most effective after educational workshops on bias literacy (1-2 hour sessions recommended).
Development and Impact
Development Cycle:
- Research evidence → Open source release → Community adoption → Institutional implementation → Policy impact
- Continuous feedback loop for improvement
Key Insight: The efficiency gap presents a false choice. Evidence shows we can have both speed and thoughtfulness if we design for it.
