Highlights from our participation at Open Source Congress 2024

The Open Source Initiative (OSI) proudly participated in the Open Source Congress 2024, held from August 25-27 in Beijing, China. This event was a gathering for key individuals in the Open Source nonprofit community, aiming to foster collaboration, innovation, and strategic development within the ecosystem. Here are some highlights from OSI’s participation at the event.

CRA standards request draft published

The European Commission recently published a public draft of the standards request associated with the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). For those who depend on incorporating or creating Open Source software, there is an encouraging new development found here. For the first time in a European standards request, there is an express requirement to respect the needs of Open Source developers and users.

OSI’s responds to NTIA on widely available AI models

In addition to joining a number of other organizations in responding to the NTIA’s Request for Comment on, OSI has provided its organizational response to the call for public comment, centering its encouragement on the societal benefits of open models and emphasizing the need to complete the development of a recognized definition of the concept of “Open Source AI” as fundamental to effective policy-making regarding Artificial Intelligence.

Letter to U.S. Commerce Secretary Raimondo urging protection of openness and transparency in AI

The OSI contributed, along with other members of civil society and academia, to a letter drafted by Mozilla and the Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) asking the White House and Congress to exercise great caution when considering whether and how to regulate the publication of open models.

NTIA engages civil society on questions of open foundation models for AI, hears benefits of openness in the public interest

OSI shares key takeaways from a recent listening session of the National Telecommunications and Information Agency conducted with Civil Society organizations about the benefits and risks associated with offering wide availability of model weights and other components of open and closed foundation models.
