Open Source is taking new turns in Africa.

Open Source in Africa is taking a different turn. It is going policy. We have done the "raising dust" or advocay part. We have also done the debate part of it. The time for constructive and sustainable action is here. The Free Software and Open Source Foundation is now engaging with Regional blocks to entrench FOSS in national ICT Policies. In the recently-concluded FOSS meeting between the Foundation and representatives of the member states of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, there was little time for talk. It was more of doing and action than talk and debate.

This report is a summary of Zak Greant's Open Source Initiative activities for the weeks of March 30th to April 5th and April 6th to 12th, 2008.

These Weeks

  • Light OSI community service work (mostly answering private queries on mailing lists, discussing OSI issues at Go Open, etc.)
  • Dropped the ball on the RfP - just got too busy.
  • Keynote at Go Open in Oslo, Norway

Next Week

Study: ~50% of Norwegian Software Vendors Integrate FOSS Components

... based on an extensive screening of software companies, with more than 700 responses.

Analysis shows that close to 50% of the software industry integrate OSS components into vertical solutions serving all major business sectors.

In addition, more than 30% of the companies using OSS components have over 40% of their income from OSS related services or software.

This Week

  • Alolita Sharma, Andrew C. Oliver and I sent the draft infrastructure RFP to the board for review.
  • Worked with the rest of the OSI team on developing the affiliate/membership/somethingship program.

OSI at OSCON 2007

We've been setting up our calendar for OSCON 2007 Once again the OSI Board will be holding public meetings and also a day-long work session. Michael just blogged the "high points" but this is the whole list. As always, we're hoping to see any and all supporters of Open Source. There are some very interesting issues facing Open Source these days. Come be part of the action and help us work out solutions that will work to keep the Open Source Effect alive.
